Bufus Outlaw Jr.
Founder and Chief Executive Officer,The BOE Group, Inc.
Chief Executive Officer, BOE Securities Inc.
Bufus Outlaw founded BOE Securities fueled by his passion for investment research and his life-long dream of being an entrepreneur. He had a vision of creating a mainstream firm that would offer the marketplace unique investment perspectives on stocks that are value-based versus the traditional EPS-based approach used by most sell-side firms. From a beginning with only one other employee, Bufus and his management team have led BOE Securities to become a multi-national investment research boutique providing fundamental research on many leading global companies and serving institutional clients that include the largest money managers in the world. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Bufus demonstrated his commitment to hard work and performance at an early age. He worked at his father’s Exxon service station in his youth which stimulated his personal desire for entrepreneurship. He learned the value of customer service and what it takes to be successful in serving clients. He was a notable football player during high school. As an athlete he learned the value of discipline and what he describes as “hustle” to recognize and do whatever it takes to get the job done. His commitment to excellence in athletics and academics led him to receiving a full scholarship to Howard University. He continued to excel in both while at Howard and earned his BBA in Accounting in 1982. Bufus interned at 3M Corporation during college and upon graduation joined the company as a product accountant. During his career there, he was quickly promoted to increasing levels of responsibility. Bufus left 3M to pursue his MBA at the University of Chicago. He chose to further his academic studies in business because of his entrepreneurial dream which had expanded by that point to someday creating and managing a global company. He felt that his MBA studies would provide him with broader business training to prepare for this eventual goal. As a student at the University of Chicago, Bufus successfully juggled the responsibilities of his academic studies with campus leadership. He served in leadership roles in several student organizations. He was also an active member of CAPM (Chicago’s Approach to Portfolio Management), a student led investment club. This involvement sparked an insatiable interest and passion for the market and investments that eventually led him to his destiny in starting BOE Securities. After earning his MBA in 1987, Bufus joined First Bank Systems where he provided M&A, financing and investment advisory services to middle market clients. He later joined Ryder Corporation, leading strategic business planning, acquisition and divestiture projects. Feeling the desire to bring his dream into reality, he left Ryder to return to his native city to start a financial consulting firm. Upon returning to Philadelphia however, Bufus was recruited to be a Principal and Director of Research for Sturdivant & Company, a start-up investment management and brokerage firm. He viewed this opportunity as another stepping stone that would strengthen his knowledge and experience for running his own investment firm; therefore he opted to postpone his dream for a while longer. In 1997, Bufus opened the doors of BOE Securities to serve the needs of a niche market that wanted unbiased equity research. Bufus leads the process that enables BOE to deliver unique research insights by setting strategic direction, recruiting and developing talented people and by focusing the BOE team on anticipating and meeting clients’ needs. He brings his early-established, personal value of “hustle” to BOE and instills this value and attitude in the firm – the commitment to do whatever it takes to get the job done and deliver results for clients. Bufus is also personally driven by innovation. He is constantly looking for innovative ways that BOE can serve its clients and deliver value-added research perspectives. He looks for new ideas in everything he encounters. He examines other industries, social trends, cultures and even “nature”, looking for models that he can replicate at BOE that will create greater value for BOE’s clients. Bufus sees BOE Securities as his life’s work. He is proud of BOE’s history, its investment performance and of its client relationships. He is also proud that BOE has enabled opportunities for people to develop and grow professionally through their association with the firm. For Bufus, BOE is the culmination of his two passions – the financial services industry and creating a global investment firm. Because BOE is his dream brought to life, he cannot imagine himself doing anything else. Bufus is often described as a fun-loving character that’s passionate, enthusiastic and optimistic. He has a can-do attitude and a strong belief in his ability to make things happen. He is an avid reader of business books and an enthusiastic learner who explores new subjects and ideas with great zeal. His strengths include risk-taking and seeing opportunities that others do not. He views himself as “not afraid to fail,” therefore he is willing to try new things. He sees new opportunities as learning experiments whether they turn out as expected or end up in surprising ways. His interests include sports, traveling and exploring museums. He is also a quasi connoisseur of restaurants and a fervent fan of many sports teams. Bufus takes great pride in his life achievements including his association with his alma maters, creating BOE Securities and his role as a father. In addition to his academic background, Bufus is Series 7, 24, 27, 63 and 87 licensed. He is actively involved in many professional, business and social organizations. He served on the board of the National Black Business Council and on the board of RISA (Reinvest in South Africa) Charitable Trust. He created the BOE Foundation of Achievement in 1997, a non-profit organization with the mission to help inner-city children discover the internet. He was honored by South Philadelphia High School with his induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame becoming the first African American graduate to receive this recognition.

Sabu Joseph
President/ Director of Research,The BOE Group, Inc.

Director of Research, BOE Securities, Inc.
As one of our Principals, Sabu Joseph has been a cornerstone in the development and leadership of BOE. He leads our global research team in providing research insights that empower our institutional clients to outperform the market. As a key member of the management team, Sabu helps to set our high standards for research and constantly seeks to uniquely create value for our clients. Before joining BOE, Sabu was Vice-President and Director of Research at a leading regional investment firm. His talents in research were recognized by our founder and CEO who recruited Sabu to be a part of the firm’s start-up team. Sabu was inspired to take this risk because of the appreciation for research that he recognized in the BOE vision. He felt that BOE would offer an opportunity to set a new standard in the quality of research that was being offered in the market. Sabu reflects upon the enthusiasm he had for being able to make research a value-added tool for clients on the buy-side. “Because BOE wasn’t motivated by investment banking fees that often drive the players on the sell-side, we focused on providing unique research that reflected the real value of companies over the long term.” He helped to develop BOE’s research framework. Eight years later, he is still enthused and motivated by BOE’s mission to provide unique research insights to sophisticated investors. When asked what distinguishes BOE from other firms, Sabu states that it is the nature of our research culture that enables us to stand out in the industry. He believes that because BOE encourages independent thinking yet provides a consistent structure for our research, we provide a higher caliber of analysis. Sabu feels that providing a collaborative “firm-style” (i.e. BOE-style) for our analyses and avoiding the “star-analyst style” that is often seen in the industry enables us to develop clear, concise, easy-to-read research reports that are delivered in a timely manner. Sabu also believes; however, that because BOE is an entrepreneurial environment, everyone is able to contribute their best and most critical thinking to shape the quality of our research output. Sabu comments that “from analyst to CEO, we get the best of everyone’s skills and knowledge which results in a higher quality of research insights.” Sabu believes that BOE’s track record is a testimony of our commitment to our vision. “We don’t jump up and down on a daily basis, but we take a long-term framework toward analysis. We put investors’ interests first. We think like investment managers because we have been on that side of the table. That experience enables us to know the true needs of our clients because we used to be users of research, just like our clients.” Sabu is motivated by a passion for research which reflects in our team. He takes great pride in being a part of building BOE’s research team from two analysts to a global team of over twenty. Sabu believes that BOE’s success in creating value for our clients is reflected in our firm’s growth and that the only way for BOE to continue to be successful is by continuing to serve the unique needs of our clients with research insights that accurately reflect the value of the companies we cover. In his free time, Sabu enjoys a variety of activities with his wife and three children including international travel. Sabu enjoys playing several sports including tennis, soccer and golf. Sabu confesses to never being able to turn off his research mindset though. He jokes that no matter what he is doing, he is always thinking about research and what companies are doing in the market. For example, when he plays tennis he wants to know who made the ball, he wants to know what games his kids want and why, he looks at what his wife is buying; his mind is always on research. Sabu brings his research enthusiasm as well as discipline and courageous decision-making to his leadership of the BOE research team. His ability and willingness to make definitive investment calls sets him apart from other analysts. Sabu earned his MBA from Drexel University and his Bachelor’s degree with honors in math and physics at Gandhiji University in his native country of India. He is certified as a Chartered Accountant (equivalent of a CPA). In addition to his vast background in fundamental research, Sabu has experience in internal auditing and management consulting which contribute to his overall business acumen and expertise. He is 7, 24, 63, 86 & 87 licensed.
